I'm on Virgin broadband and that has been fine for Internet speed, but the
email is still extremely flaky following their recent "improvements".

Not noticed a problem with email myself (but i dont use it that often as i
have my own accounts).
I did an adslguide speed test and not getting good results at all ... as
follows:

Downstream 136 Kbps (17.0 KB/sec) 146 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

That is with nothing else running on my Connection.

Well your upstream doesn't look too bad, but the more important downstream
results are awful. I'm currently showing ...

Downstream 477 Kbps (59.6 KB/sec) 515 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 247 Kbps (30.9 KB/sec) 266 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Looks like you've got a bottleneck somewhere Andrew.

Just set my network card to 100mbit/full duplex instead of auto negotiate...

an improvement:

Downstream 354 Kbps (44.3 KB/sec) 382 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 252 Kbps (31.5 KB/sec) 272 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Ill try change the settings on my routers switch now ....

Im connected to a 100mbit switch that cannot be managed ..... the router
down stairs
has settings to change each port.

Here goes ;-)

I have DU Meter constantly monitoring my network speed (PC to ADSL
Router).

Normal speed when downloading files (from the Internet) is around a
steady 60kB/sec.

Sometimes (usually evenings) the speed graph shows erratic speeds,
30kB/sec or less.

My newsreader, which has its own speed indication, confirms what DU
Meter is showing. A reverse trace looks OK at the moment. I'll try
again next time I see a slowdown.

This reverse trace was taken at 10pm Friday, while download speed was
erratic. Not much difference. There must be a problem between me and
